Had an environmental thought!!!

Was just taking my shower on this hot day and I just thought "Damn!!! I really want water." But just by belonging to the land of mightiest rivers, white water rapids, deep forests and "Gods" does not ensure that I shall have what I want in terms of all the water I need.

Just a day back, I was picking up my bike from the Infy car parking and saw the Ozone board outside building 12 which said "Recycled water used only for watering plants". And now as I took the bath, this one line conjures up in my mind, out of the blue."Recycled" was the word. Sure the water was used only for watering plants, but it was serving a purpose. All the more, the water cycle took care of the rest, took care that the water ultimately passed back to our drinking cups and quench our thirst.

And in this frenzy of thoughts, I thought a thought of using recycled water all across my city Haldwani… How about it? As I see it, the city is perfectly designed for the purpose. Every home has a garden ranging from small to huge and every home has water requirement for tasks ranging from drinking, bathing to watering the very gardens. And we all crib when the water supply goes kaput… What if we could recycle water? In fact, we could recycle more…

Most of the water that we use in our kitchens and for bathing and washing clothes could be directly used for watering plants. Same goes for the water we might use for washing our cars. If only that water is collected and prevented from being mixed with the truly soiled water. Additionally most of the structures in Haldwani are huge single storied buildings and even the high rises are not residential complexes but rather single homes with big roofs. These are apt for rain water harvesting. All this water can be "used" and we all could have great gardens in our backyards.

Additionally the water from the drains could be treated and reused for irrigational purposes. The presence of canals in the city is best suited for the task. Anaerobic treatment will even help in generating much needed energy in the form of bio fuel which can be sold in market.

But how to do that? How to make people think on those lines? If only we can take the idea of carbon credits to the masses. If only we can get people cash in their carbon credits. Further more, companies can finance such projects and they do. Companies are already financing projects ranging from covering the arctic in reflecting sheets to prevent melting of the arctic glaciers to adding iron oxide (rust) to ocean water for facilitating the growth of corals…

The ideas are many and the possibilities are tremendous…

Maybe some day we will all think of having a highly environmental Haldwani, even if as a pilot project, the green city in its true essence. And then some day the whole of our "Harit Pradesh" will live to its meaning…

Entire India will join in soon…
